I love to travel. Having already been to over 30 Countries, I wanted a cool visual way to keep track of my travels. I’m also a lover of globes, so I figured I needed to create a DIY scratch-off globe.
The idea is to scratch off each country after you visit it, and eventually, one day, every Country will be showing on your DIY scratch-off globe. It’s a fun craft for any traveler, or a great gift for someone with a bad case of wanderlust.
This is incredibly easy to do and more importantly, very cheap! I bought my globe (I went with a fairly small globe) off of eBay for a few dollars. The only downside to this was that I had to wait a few months for it to arrive as it was coming from China. So, if you want to create your own DIY scratch-off globe quicker, you might want to buy yours elsewhere.
diy scratch-off globe supply list
- Globe (large, medium, small – it’s up to you)
- Rain Grey craft paint
- Dish soap
- Black Paint Marker
- Firm, fine tip paint brush
Now that you have all of your supplies, let’s get started!
First, grab your black paint marker. This is the one I used.
The tip is a bit on the larger side, which isn’t horrible. But, some of the Countries on the globe are very small, so a medium tipped paint marker will make things go smoother.
Next, you’re going to take your paint marker and outline all of the Countries on the globe. You’ll find that some of the really small Countries – for example, the ones in the Caribbean – are too small to outline. Don’t even try to outline those. Instead, when you get to filling in the Countries with the grey rain craft paint, just use a dot of that on those small ones.
This is how your outline should look. Make sure you get every boarder. Using a globe like mine – where the Countries are different colors – makes this a lot easier.
Once your outline paint has dried (shouldn’t take longer than an hour), you can start to paint in all of the Countries.
To create your DIY scratch-off globe mixture, you’re going to add your rain grey craft paint with your dish soap. To ensure you get the correct amounts, I suggest using a plastic spoon. Simply mix together two spoons of dish soap with one spoon of silver craft paint.
With your firm, fine tipped paint brush, paint your DIY scratch-off globe mixture on every Country, avoiding the boarder lines you drew on earlier.
When you’re done, this is how your globe should look.
I personally really like the dark silver, but you can use any color you like. I don’t recommend using any color that any of the Countries will be once you have scratched them clear.
Let the paint dry over-night and then start scratching off everywhere you’ve been. Remember not to stop until you’ve been everywhere!
